In the Silence

Social distancing has brought most of us face to face with our own inner selves in a way that is unprecedented.  Unless we have small children, there are many hours in a day to be alone with our thoughts amid the turmoil of the world.  This is a good time to ask ourselves: "Am I comfortable spending time with me? Can I sit in silence and find comfort, or do I distract my anxious thoughts with T.V., news or social media?"

For myself, it's all too easy to start my morning by reading the paper and getting caught up in social media before I do the practices that feed my spirit and connect me to God.  I find that when I remind myself to first do some yoga poses, diffuse essential oils and seek the Silence within through meditation and prayer, I feel connected and renewed, rather than anxious about the state of the world.

"It is the place of openness and of silence where God finds us and we find him, but it is also a space for listening to others, for a deepening sense of awareness of relatedness to the world...so not only is that inner space within myself to be kept free and uncluttered, but it also has to be watered, refreshed from the fountain at its center."   -Esther de Waal, Lost in Wonder

It helps to have a meditation corner; a place devoted to the practice of silence.  I sit in a rocking chair in a corner of my bedroom, next to a bookshelf that holds my inspirational books and journals.  Candles, flowers, photos, essential oils, whatever creates a mood for quiet contemplation is helpful.

Finding the inner space of silence and tranquility requires clearing out and releasing the debris  that I've accumulated in my daily thought patterns; breathing out negativity, anger, sadness, unforgiveness and anything else that hinders; breathing in Light, Love and Peace.  I imagine that there is a fountain at my heart center, spilling out rose colored light that cleanses and refreshes and then wrapping me in a protective cocoon.
I carry that with me into the new day; the silence at my core, the refreshment and protection of the Divine.  In gratitude and reverence, I move forward.

Love Is the Answer

Meditating this morning, the phrase "Love is the Answer" floated into my mind like an ethereal thought bubble.  The lyrics to a seventies song by England Dan and John Ford Coley came to mind clearly:
Light of the World
Shine on me,
Love is the answer
Shine on us all,
Set us free, love is the answer...

Like a trap door that suddenly sprang open, I was flooded with memories of growing up in the sixties and seventies, too young to be part of the civil rights movement or the Vietnam War protests, but old enough to feel the emotions of the times and have a sense of what was happening in our country.  I was a Beatles fan and John Lennon's messages of universal love and peace resonated strongly with me.  It was a period of great disruption: marches and protests, rallies and, yes, sometimes violence.  Similar to what is happening today.  A great need for justice arises in the hearts of humanity and the status quo is interrupted.

But change always requires disruption.  It requires people of conscience to say "enough is enough! and to demand the change that must come for us to move forward.  Most importantly, it requires love, in the agape sense: love of man(and woman)kind.  Love that reaches beyond the limitations of the law of the day if it is unfair; love that transcends the darkness of hopelessness and despair; love that embraces all people as equal, each one deserving dignity and respect.

I was watching a news show the other night about the protests in Louisville, Kentucky. The reporter on the ground was saying that as soon as the National Guard stopped strong-arming people and moved away, the local police started moving in, listening to people and shaking hands, sometimes stopping to pray with protesters and really paying attention to their concerns, at which time the mood of the protest changed to something beautiful and transformative.  WE NEED MORE OF THIS!

Love is always the answer...

Give me love, give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light, give me life
Give me hope, help me cope
With this heavy load
Trying to, touch and reach you with
Heart and soul

Let Peace Begin With Me

The unrest and pain of the world can seem overwhelming.  Current events weigh heavily on our hearts and it may feel like we're powerless to change anything.  What can we do, after all, in the face of racism, violence and economic disparity and uncertainty?  Is there reason to hope?

I see hope always, in the morning -- each day is new and fresh.  I step out into the garden and am delighted to find that it is bursting with life and promise.  Irises and peonies budded and ready to open, green and white hostas refreshed by the rain, birds singing their morning ode to joy.

As I breathe in the morning air and sigh a prayer,  an old song comes to mind:

"Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me...
Let There Be Peace on Earth
The peace that was meant to be
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With ev'ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow
To take each moment and live
each moment in peace eternally

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me".....(songwriters Jill Jackson and Sy Miller)

I can begin, this morning, to keep peace in my heart, to be kind and to build others up rather than judge or diminish in any way.  I can search my heart and ask God to remove any prejudice that is there so that I can fully see the worth of others, even those whose viewpoints differ from my own.  I can speak out against injustice when I see it and vow to never be silent in the face of evil.

I take a moment now, to be silent, to follow my breath to the source of my being, releasing all thoughts; filling my heart with the rosy light of peace and love.
I give this to the world, as my small offering...
when I move from the Silence to action, I carry this with me and go in peace.
