Garden Secrets

 The morning is soft and gray... I walk through the garden without my glasses, the colors of the flowers muted and indistinct, like a Monet painting. As I breathe deeply, I feel immersed in a cloud; the early dew seeping into my parched soul. I see that the garden has come alive: the Hydrangeas and Rose of Sharon have opened; Shasta daisies, Echinacea and Day lilies are in the middle of their month-long display, and I am filled with gratitude for the beauty of flowers.

I remember reading once that flowers, more than anything else in creation, speak to us of the nature of God. They exist simply to be beautiful and to create nectar for the bees, who in turn pollinate everything in nature.They fascinate our senses with their intricate and varied designs, beautiful fragrance and spectacular array of colors. Who else but a loving God would create something so lovely to paint the earth and remind his children to appreciate beauty in all its forms?  The evidence for the Creator is truly in the creation.

When I was going through a particularly difficult period in my life, I planted many of the flowers that so bless me now. I had the feeling that if I could create something beautiful for each painful experience, I would transform my world in some way.  It worked, in many ways, at least to help me through that time, and now, the garden has become a peaceful sanctuary, a place to rest and heal. There is a lot of maintenance of course, but even the act of working in the garden is therapeutic. The plants absorb pain, sadness and grief and offer their gifts of peace and loveliness in return.

When my daughters were young, we read The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a well-known classic about the healing power of a garden. The girls loved the story and every so often we would watch the movie-it always made us cry.  I will finish today's reflection with a lovely quote from the book that speaks to my heart:

“Sometimes since I've been in the garden I've looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy as if something was pushing and drawing in my chest and making me breathe fast. Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us. In this garden - in all the places.”

A Song for This Day

 It's funny how, often when I'm worried about someone or something, God will put a song in my heart. It will just spring up, reminding me that the Spirit of comfort is always with me. Today, the song that came to mind is an old African spiritual song called "Peace Like a River". I don't remember when I first learned it or the last time I sang it, but the words are balm to my soul this morning:

I researched the origins of this song and found that it was sung by African slaves as they worked in the fields. It tells me that no matter what my situation is, I can know the soothing spirit of peace; I can feel the power and immensity of love and I can find joy in the moment. No matter what my mood is when I start singing, I will be transformed and empowered to go about my day with the conviction that I am not alone. I hope that you will know this peace, joy and love today as well.

In the Pursuit of Happiness

 "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...."  These familiar words from the Declaration of Independence remind us that life itself and liberty as the ability to make our own choices in the pursuit of happiness, are gifts from God. 


These are such beautiful words, yet when I meditate on this quote for a few moments, I am somewhat confused by the phrase "the pursuit of happiness", which makes it sound as if happiness is an elusive quality that we are always seeking yet never finding. When I look up the dictionary definition of "pursuit" however, I see that I've forgotten it has two meanings: the act of following and trying to catch something or engaging in something, as an activity.  

I'm not sure which meaning the founding fathers had in mind, but I'm going to choose the second definition, because it makes more sense. If we apply it to the concept of happiness, it sounds as though it is something we can choose to engage in, to enter into. So, happiness, defined as "an emotional state, characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment and fulfillment", can be a choice we make on a daily basis.

We can wake up on a beautiful summer morning such as this and instead of taking on our usual worries, we can let them go for a bit and focus on whatever is excellent or praiseworthy. We can look in the mirror, and instead of cursing our age lines and gray hairs, begin to see ourselves as beloved beings who've been on earth for a while and have a wealth of wisdom and creativity to share with others. We can step outside and really connect with the earth, feeling the wet grass beneath our feet and breathing deeply of the fresh air.

I believe that when we practice gratitude daily, when we look for the ray of light and hope even in the midst of challenging circumstances, we will stop seeking happiness and will begin to realize that it was here in our hearts all along.

A Morning Prayer

The sounds of the morning are like a prayer...birdsong and the chattering of small creatures; the soft sighing of breezes stirring through branches, whispering "be thankful". The ground, refreshed by rain, is soft and yielding, gardens nourished again. All around me, summer flowers offer their beauty to the moment.

Yes, I am thankful, simply this; to be here now, breathing the sun-kissed air, opening myself to the earth and sky. There is nothing more that I must do, in this experience of now, but to express my gratitude to God, the Source of it all and to sit, immersed in the wonder around me.

The words to a favorite song come to mind, as they often do:

How very special are we
For just a moment to be
Part of life’s eternal rhyme
How very special are we
To have on our family tree
Mother Earth and Father Time

He turns the seasons around
And so she changes her gown
But they always look in their prime
They go on dancing their dance
