On a typical day, I may feel like just an ordinary human being, going about my business. I have a morning routine, responsibilities to fulfill, places to be. But each one of us carries the spark of the divine within us, ready to be fanned into flame. We may not even know it's there.
I'm imagining human existence and our lifetimes of experience like an extended Christmas morning for a young child. The gifts are excitedly opened one by one; some we are delighted with, others are a big disappointment. We move from each new gift expectantly, eagerly, hoping for some sense of fulfillment, for the one gift that will make our lives complete. Yet in our excitement, we may miss the unassuming package behind the tree, the one that's not obvious because the wrapping might be less appealing. This gift, if accepted and opened, begins to reveal to us our inner light, which has been freely given by God. All we have to do is say, "Yes, I would like to open my gift now, thank you".
It's all in the asking and accepting, something that can be a process. We may accept grace and begin to reveal our light, only to lose our way as difficulties and challenges come along. So then this is a daily exercise: opening our gift, connecting with our light, releasing cares and worries and embracing our true nature.
I am reminded of the children's song: "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, shine, shine...everywhere I go, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, shine shine"
Take a moment out of your busy morning to turn within, to say yes, today,
I'm going to open my gift and let my light shine.
